The Boston Living Center offers many opportunities to work directly with the HIV/AIDS community or in support of it. Your commitment will be meaningful and much appreciated, whether you want to volunteer for a few hours a week or a few times a month. Our volunteers are a diverse group and include students, corporate groups, church groups, alumni clubs and more.

For more information or to set up an appointment for an orientation, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Nicholas Oviedo-Torres at volunteer@vpi.org or 617.318.3434 ext. 147.

  • Please know all volunteer roles will directly impact the lives of those living with HIV/AIDS – we thank you in advance for considering a commitment to working with us!
  • Volunteers must be 18 years of age and over.
  • All volunteers must sign a confidentiality agreement to protect the personal information of our membership.

Potential volunteers begin with an orientation with our Volunteer Coordinator. The orientation lasts about 40 minutes and includes completing necessary paperwork, an interview and discussion of available positions and a tour of the Boston Living Center.
A CORI (Criminal Offense Record Information) check is conducted on all volunteer candidates.

We welcome BLC members to become volunteers as well, but request that you wait three weeks after joining the Center before volunteering. Once this initial period is over, members are encouraged to volunteer – this is YOUR Center and your involvement is critically important!

The BLC serves up 40,000 warm and nutritious meals a year to people living with HIV/AIDS. We serve lunch four days a week and dinner three days a week. Volunteers are at the heart of the meals program, helping set-up our dining room, prepare and serve food and clean up – washing dishes, pots, pans, sweeping and mopping floors.

Dinner – Monday, 5:30PM – 8PM

Volunteers will check volunteer and member (BLC clients) belongings while they are visiting the center. Be one of the first to warmly greet our members upon their arrival!

Computer Lab (Cyberspace)

Monitor the computer room and be available for member questions.
Provide one-on-one support to members in the lab or teach your own class.

Holistic Programs

Certified volunteer massage therapists and energy healers are needed to provide services to our members.

Hours are flexible.

Certified Hairstylists and Barbers

As part of providing a holistic experience for our members, the BLC offers free, dry hair cuts to members with the help of volunteer stylists. All haircuts are done at the BLC in our studio.

Special Events

Volunteers assist with a variety of tasks at fundraising events. Volunteers may also help in member event preparation and implementation.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

The BLC would also love to hear about your special talents and how you might assist the Center. Do you have a skill you think would benefit our members or staff? We’d love to hear from you!

Groups and Organizations

We are happy to work with small groups (approximately 5 volunteers), but don’t always have the opportunity to accommodate larger groups. However, there are other ways your group could help the BLC. For more information, see our Wish List.
