reVision Aquaculture
The reVision Urban
Agriculture and Aquaculture Project serves as a multi-dimensional model for
environmental management and community development. The project encompasses pollution
remediation of vacant lots and urban food production through an
integrated, community-driven process.
The guiding objective of the project is to link the long-term health
of our community with an ecological development strategy rooted in an
urban neighborhood.
The
aquaculture program at reVision House provides a replicable model for
micro-enterprise development for individuals and community-based
organizations. The project
originated as a complementary activity to increase the self-sufficiency
and confidence of homeless mothers, while providing them and their
families with a nutritious protein source. In 1997, the three-story back porch
of reVision House was renovated into a solar greenhouse where
demonstration hydroponic systems were constructed. The aquaculture project raises Tilapia
fish and a variety of food crops, including basil, in the four-season
facility.
